Microsoft is the world's largest software maker measured by revenues. It is also one of the world's most valuable companies. From the past few years Microsoft is striving to keep its place against its competitors in industry. So is Microsoft is really walking in good direction to compete against its competitors?
Microsoft Windows came to dominate the world's personal computer market with over 90% market share, overtaking Mac OS, which had been introduced in 1984.Since then windows showing a tremendous change in its operating systems in terms of speed, features and UI.In response to the growing interest in GUI(graphical user interfaces) windows tried to minimize consumers effort by replacing commands with simple button pressing.
From past few years windows is struggling to make its stand in market. With the failure of Windows Vista, Microsoft took extra care in the development of Windows 7 by taking the consumers feedback.Windows 7 released into market with User Interface which is similar to vista and all its features while maintaining speed. It became a huge success in market and sold 600 million Windows 7 licenses to this date.
Windows 8:
Windows 8 tried to bring back the customers who switched from windows to MAC resulting in a number of significant changes that were made on Windows 8, including the introduction of a user interface based around Microsoft's Metro design language with optimizations for touch-based devices such as tablets and all-in-one PCs.
These changes include the removal of the traditional start screen and replacing it with new Metro UI with large tiles optimized for touch based screens and allow for the display of continually updated information and a new class of apps which are designed primarily for use on touch-based devices. Other changes include increased integration with cloud services and other online platforms (such as social networks and Microsoft's own SkyDrive and Xbox Live services), the Windows Store service for software distribution, and a new variant known as Windows RT for use on devices that utilize the ARM architecture.
But the traditional windows users didn't adapt quite well these changes such as the removal of the start button and switching start screen from desktop to metro screen, etc which resulted in the disappointed sales in market.
Windows 8 sold more than 100 million licenses including upgrades from previous versions, laptops and PC's with default windows 8 OS and original Windows 8 sales.Even though Windows 8 came with numerous significant changes for touch screen devices it failed to give a reason to upgrade from windows 7 for normal PC users considering windows OS is mainly used in PC's more than tablets or any touch devices.Even Windows store isn't able to attract the crowd as it doesn't contain anything special.
Finally In my opinion on windows 8 is that it is a significant improvement compared to its previous version in terms of speed, features and UI but most of them are in the wrong direction. Most of the windows buyers are PC and laptop users who doesn't have touch screens,so instead of optimizing OS for touch screen devices Microsoft should have concentrated more on traditional systems rather than touch screen devices.

How do you feel about the absence of start button?
XBOX ONE:
XBOX ONE Live announcement raised a question for me.
Is XBOX ONE a gaming device which includes entertainment or is it a
entertainment device which includes gaming? This is the biggest question I
asked myself after watching XBOX ONE live announcement yesterday.
XBOX ONE is surprisingly amazing with a lot of potential and features but what is the main purpose of XBOX ONE? Is Microsoft changing XBOX purpose from a gaming console to an entertainment device? Are these features really necessary for a gaming console? Well we can't tell yet but from what we know till now about PS4 and XBOX ONE I can say that PS4 is sticking to its roots of being a gaming console but XBOX ONE aims for a different experience "The All in One Experience". From what we have seen from XBOX ONE we can say that it is a multitasking hardware component then is it good? The reason why PC needs higher hardware requirements than console is that PC multitasks and contains a wide range of hardware components so it is difficult to optimize a game for PC,then what about XBOX ONE? It contains same hardware but It might sacrifice some of its power for multitasking other features that it features. We still don't know how multitasking is implemented in XBOX ONE but the they did announced that it core windows 8 design,if that is the case how well they optimized for this piece of hardware? We shall wait and see.
While sony spending money on PS4 hardware providing best possible NextGen console I think Microsoft is spending more money on other extra features.
For Example PS4 contains 8GB DDR-5 Ram where XBOX ONE contains 8GB DDR-3 Ram.
As for now we can't yet decide which console is better but Sony seems to be focusing more on core gaming experience while XBOX ONE is targeting All in One Experience.
Which Console do you prefer?
